Overload at Mombasa Port
Congestion at Mombasa Port has now reached grave levels. The port's container yard, which has a capacity of 14,500 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) has over 18,000 containers and rising.
The overall delay between berthing, unloading the vessel, transportation in the port to the correct terminal and customs clearance is now 40 days, instead of the usual 20-day average.
This extended period inevitably attracts demurrage and port rent charges.
These delays impact not only upon shipping to Kenya, but also to all neighboring land-locked countries dependent on Mombasa as a Port of Entry.
